With 4 Oregon State Championships, and countless league titles, Prospector Baseball has a rich tradition of excellence.
Coach Art Thunell and Grant Union Baseball
Coach Art Thunell’s connection to Grant Union baseball is central to the program’s history and to the mission of the Art Thunell Legacy Fund. Being an alumnus of Grant Union himself, his influence extended beyond the field, helping shape generations of players and strengthening baseball’s place within the Grant Union and John Day community.
Malone Field and Grant Union Baseball
Malone Field is an important part of the Grant Union baseball story in John Day, Oregon. Dating back to its first season in 1987, it has become more than a playing surface. It represents generations of Grant Union players, coaches, families, and supporters who have gathered around the program and helped build its place in the community. Once tabbed one of the top 5 baseball fields in the state of Oregon, it remains a top tourist spot for those passing through John Day.
Carrying The Tradition Forward
Grant Union baseball continues its proud tradition under current Head Coach Trey Thompson. A Grant Union alumnus himself, Trey wore the Prospectors uniform before continuing his baseball career at the University of Oregon, where he played club baseball.
Although Trey did not play for Coach Art Thunell, his path reflects the same connection between Grant Union baseball, opportunity, and giving back to the next generation. Today, as head coach, Trey is helping carry that tradition forward alongside several legendary GU Alums as part of his staff. Together, the staff remains focused on developing young players, strengthening the program, and creating opportunities for Grant Union student-athletes to grow both on and off the field.
