What Is Malone Field?
Malone Field is part of the 7th Street Complex in John Day, Oregon, and has long been connected to Grant Union baseball and the people who support it.
For generations of players, coaches, families, volunteers, and community members, the field has been more than a place to play baseball. It is a shared community space where relationships are built, traditions are carried forward, and new memories continue to be made.
Malone Field and Grant Union Baseball
Grant Union baseball has connected generations of Prospectors. Players who once competed here have returned years later as parents, coaches, volunteers, supporters, and alumni.
The 2026 Grant Union Alumni Baseball Game brought many of those generations together again and demonstrated how strong that connection remains.
Malone Field is one of the physical places where that history meets the present. Supporting the field is one way to help make sure future Grant Union players have a place where their own experiences and traditions can take root.
Caring for Malone Field Today
Community facilities require ongoing care, maintenance, planning, and cooperation. Malone Field is no different.
The Art Thunell Legacy Fund recognizes the work already being done by the people who maintain, manage, coach, volunteer, and spend time at the field. Our role is not to replace those efforts or assume that we already know every need.
Instead, the Fund hopes to help bring additional people, ideas, resources, and support into the conversation when those resources can be useful.

Good ideas can come from anywhere.
The Art Thunell Legacy Fund welcomes ideas from players, coaches, alumni, families, volunteers, maintenance staff, local organizations, businesses, neighbors, and anyone else who cares about Malone Field and the people who use it.
You do not need to be a Grant Union alumnus, a donor, or a member of the Fund to have something worthwhile to contribute.
Not every idea can or should happen immediately. Some may address a current need. Others may become valuable as the baseball program, attendance, available funding, or community needs change.
Listening to an idea does not mean promising to build it. It means giving worthwhile suggestions a place in the conversation and considering them at the appropriate time.
How Ideas Can Become Priorities
As ideas are discussed, they can be considered according to need, safety, usefulness, community benefit, cost, sustainability, available resources, and timing.

As projects move forward, the Art Thunell Legacy Fund intends to use photographs and updates to document what is being considered, what has been completed, who helped make it possible, and what still remains.
The goal is not simply to show what changed. It is to preserve the story of how people worked together to make that progress possible.
